Homemade Laundry Detergent

Recently an acquaintance shared this recipe for homemade laundry detergent. I've been wanting to make this for a while, just got to it this week. Another friend shared this argument for not using Borax.

Dry Laundry Soap

2 500-gram boxes of Zote laundry flakes

4-pound box of Baking Soda

55-ounce box of Super Washing Soda

4-pound box of Borax

6 cups of Epsom Salt

optional: scent with 40 drops of essential oil** or a 55-ounce canister of Purex Crystals*

Combine all of the ingredients and mix well. Store in an airtight container. Use 2 tablespoons per load.

*If you're making your own detergent for green reasons, Purex Crystals won't be a good fit for you. Let the Zote be the scent you need or just leave it out.

** Some oils may stain clothes

One recipe that was shared with me was equal parts washing soda, borax and a bar of fels naptha soap, grated. It seems like the recipes vary and you can find one to fit your ecological needs!
